Your Options Once You Sell
You may not wish to deal with many of life’s details any longer and that is why you are considering selling your home. Or you may be looking at the truth of memory loss or medical issues that will require assistance. The following are some ideas to help you make a sound decision.
These are rental communities where you must be 55 years or older to live (and sometimes even 62). These are focused on independent adults who are looking for a social aspect to their lifestyle and do not require a staff person to plan their events and adventures.
INDEPENDENT LIVING / Senior Apartments / Retirement Communities
Ideal for individuals who do not require personal or medical care, but choose not to live in a home by themselves. Most facilities are equipped with standard safety features to make it easier for you to get around. Recreational activities and excursions are usually planned for you and most places offer meal plans if you wish to participate.
ASSISTED LIVING / Residential Care / Personal Care
If you do not require 24 hour care, but still need some assistance in your daily routines, this situation may work best for you. There are trained professionals that help with organizing your world and help with setting and getting you to appointments or activity centers, yet your independence is still part of your existence.
24-Hour care is the focus of these residences. If you can no longer live independently and are in need of medical attention daily, this might be the best fit for you. There is staff to assist you in every walk of life, from getting out of bed to housekeeping.
This is a specialized care option if you are progressing to extensive memory loss. Most assisted living and nursing homes offer care for this.
CONTINUING CARE COMMUNITIES
These communities usually have a campus-like atmosphere. They offer everything from private homes to nursing level care. This is perfect if you want to stay at one place. You can start in the private homes and as time goes on can move into a part of the campus that offers as much assistance as you need.
PLEASE… be very clear on what you are paying for when you sign up for any of these living options. Sometimes there are “buy-in” fees for continuing care and there may be monthly charges that you will need to be very clear on in assisted living communities and the like.
